UNDERSTANDING THE NEED FOR ROOT CANAL THERAPY
Root canal therapy is often necessary when the pulp inside your tooth, which contains nerves and blood vessels, becomes infected or inflamed. This can be due to deep decay, repeated dental procedures on the tooth, or a crack or chip in the tooth. Symptoms might include severe toothache, sensitivity to hot and cold, swelling, and pain when biting or chewing.
INSTRUCTIONS FOLLOWING ROOT CANAL THERAPY
After your root canal therapy, it’s crucial to follow specific guidelines to ensure a smooth and successful recovery. Please adhere to the instructions below and don’t hesitate to contact us with any concerns or questions.
- Eating and Drinking Restrictions: Avoid eating or drinking for the first 30 minutes post-treatment. Also, refrain from touching the treated area with your tongue to allow the temporary filling to harden properly.
- Medication Guidelines: If prescribed, fill and take your medications as directed. If not, over-the-counter options like ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) or Tylenol can be used, provided you have no allergies to these. Always follow the dosage instructions on the label. Contact us if pain persists or is unmanageable.
- Swelling Management: Use a cold compress on the face near the treated area to reduce swelling. Apply it for 20 minutes on, followed by a 20-minute break, and repeat as needed for the next 6-8 hours. Remember to place a cloth between your skin and the ice pack.
- Dietary Precautions: Until your permanent restoration is placed, avoid chewing on the treated side. The temporary filling or crown is susceptible to damage, so steer clear of hard foods like nuts, pretzels, and ice cubes. Sensitivity is normal and should subside once the final restoration is in place. Schedule a visit with your restorative dentist within a month for permanent restoration.
- Oral Hygiene: Maintain cleanliness in the treated area by gentle brushing and flossing. This helps prevent infection and promotes healing.
- Temporary Filling Care: If the temporary filling dislodges or falls out, contact your dentist immediately. After hours, you can use over-the-counter temporary filling material as a temporary solution.
- Post-Procedure Discomfort: It's normal to experience some discomfort for 2 to 4 days after the procedure, and sometimes soreness can persist for a few weeks.
- Regular Oral Care: Continue with your usual brushing and flossing routine unless advised otherwise by our office. Follow any additional instructions given during your visit and take all prescribed medications as directed.
