DENTAL IMPLANTS IN LOS ANGELES COUNTY
According to the American College of Prosthodontists, over 35 million Americans do not have any teeth in their smile, and 120 million are missing at least one tooth. Fortunately, there are many options available to those who are looking to replace their teeth. One such option is single tooth replacements, which can provide a very natural-looking and -feeling result. At SMILE HAUS, we offer both dental implants and fixed bridges as single tooth replacement options.
THE SINGLE TOOTH REPLACEMENT PROCESS
The process begins when a doctor has a consultation appointment with you. During this time, he/she will take an X-ray and potentially a scan of your jawbone to see if it is strong enough to withstand an implant. After the initial visit is over and we’ve established that you are a candidate for a single dental implant, the following will occur during the second visit:
- The doctor will numb your mouth so that you can either get local anesthesia or, depending on your tolerance, be put under.
- Once you are under anesthesia, the doctor will make an incision on the gum and place a bone graft to help the bone heal better around the implant.
- Then, the doctor will place the implant. He/she will do so by screwing in a titanium alloy rod into your gums.
- You will need to heal after the procedure. It takes about four to six months for the implant to fuse to the bone.
- Once the implant has healed, you are ready to get an implant crown placed. This will act as the cap on the tooth, covering up the implant rod and displaying the natural-looking tooth replacement.
INSTRUCTIONS AFTER SINGLE TOOTH IMPLANTS
After your implant surgery, experiencing some pain, swelling, bleeding, and seeping is typical; avoid disturbing the site with your tongue, fingers, or by pulling on your lip. To manage discomfort, ibuprofen or acetaminophen can be taken as per label instructions or as directed by our office, and applying a cold compress to the area can help reduce swelling within the first 36 hours, followed by moist heat to further decrease swelling after this period. Ensure to maintain oral hygiene by brushing and flossing the rest of your mouth, avoiding the surgery site, and adhere to a diet of liquids and soft foods for the initial days post-surgery. It’s crucial to follow all provided instructions, take prescribed medications to prevent infection, minimize denture use over the implant site to promote healing, and keep follow-up appointments to allow for monitoring of the healing process; contact our office immediately if pain or swelling increases after a few days.
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PLACE A DENTAL IMPLANT?
It takes about four to six months for the implant to completely fuse with the bone. This process can be expedited with certain techniques, such as using a smaller implant or placing the implant in an area that has a more dense bone.
HOW TO AVOID HAVING TO GET A SINGLE DENTAL IMPLANT
In order to avoid having to get a single tooth implant, the best thing you can do is take care of your natural teeth. This includes brushing and flossing your teeth twice a day, eating a healthy diet, wearing a mouth guard when playing sports, etc. We also advise that you treat your teeth with care and do not try to open anything up with your teeth.
